Current Events: Storm-ravaged Philippines braced for 'super typhoon' Parma

The article I have read on CNN was about 'Typhoon Parma' about to hit the Philippines right after 'Typhoon Ketsana'. Typhoon Ketsana has left the country leaving 246 people dead and 38 missing as it had passed over the weekend. 2 million have been affected and 567,000 were forced to evacuate their homes. Several nations have offered humanitarian assistance to the country. The United Nations has also pledged support and has considered an emergence appeal for aid. The World Food Program had also said will provide rations to 180,000 people. I think that the support of all the other nations can really help the Philippines cope from what millions of people have lost over this natural disaster. This also shows that the United Nations care for this independent nation from bracing itself for the impact of the super typhoon gathering pace in the Western Pacific.

  1. Hmm.. I wonder why these People did not just evacuate like we do in the United States. Its a horrible Idea to stay in the way of a typhoon as seen by the Deaths. They should do something like this " ttp://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~content=a791666965"

The above link is a simulation of evacuation for Galveston Island which since the Philippines is an island it would work just as well.

  2. Matt Taylor : i dont think it is as easy to evacuate as you might think. In time of crisis like this one, people panic and not everyone is able to react with decisions such as evacuating. The image above really caught my attention because I could just imagine myself caryying my little sister through this amount of water and being terrified of what was going to happen to us. This story is really sad and scary for the people who were affected by it.I hope everything is ok and the after math of it does not have too big of an efect on the victims.

  3. This made me think about Hurricane Katrina that destroyed thousands of homes and separated families. This must have been a difficult and hard time for the people of Philippines and I'm glad they are getting help from other nations.
